IVTS: Next-Generation Vessel Traffic Management
About the Project
The Indigenous Vessel Traffic System (IVTS) is a next-generation maritime traffic management platform developed at NTCPWC, IIT Madras. Built as an indigenous alternative to costly legacy systems, it unifies radar, AIS, weather, and surveillance data into a single interface, enabling safer and more efficient port operations.
As the Product Lead, I transformed complex operator workflows into an intuitive experience that reduced cognitive overload and helped VTS operators make faster, more informed decisions in high-pressure environments. By simplifying navigation, prioritizing critical alerts, and improving information hierarchy, the platform delivered an estimated 60% improvement in operational efficiency across key workflows.
Today, IVTS is deployed across multiple major Indian ports, helping reduce vessel turnaround times, strengthen coastal safety, and modernize India's maritime infrastructure. The platform has also received widespread recognition, with demonstrations showcased during high-profile government visits and gaining significant visibility as a benchmark for India's indigenous maritime innovation.
